Major Colleges and Schools of Barak Valley
The valley is one of the most lagging regions in the nation in terms of education and the literacy rate is quite low. This is mainly due to the poor economic condition of the region, lack of infrastructure and political negligence. Never the less the valley boasts of having a few premiere institutes of higher education. Institutes of national importance like National Institute of Technology or NIT, Silchar Medical College and Assam University are located at Silchar of Cachar district. There is a Polytechnic at Silchar and a ITI at Srikona of Cachar district.
{mosgoogle} Apart from these there are numerous colleges both government-run and privately held. These are governed by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council or AHSEC and also by the Assam University. The medium of teaching is English at this level. A few noteworthy of them are Guru Charan College, Cachar College, Radhamadhab College of Silchar, Srikishan Sarda College, B.Ed College, Sanskrit College of Hailakandi and Karimganj College of Karimganj.
The valley has a proud tradition of producing good result in the high school level every year. This is primarily due to the existence of many renowned schools in the entire north-east in all the three districts. A few of the more famous schools of this region are Holy Cross School, Silchar Collegiate School, Oriental School, South Point School, Muktashree School, Holy Child School, Adhar Chand School, Public School, Govt. Boys School, Govt. Girls School, Maharshi Vidya Mandir, Central School of Silchar, Govt. V. M. H.S. School of Hailakandi. There are both English and Bengali medium schools mostly under Secondary Education Board of Assam or SEBA. However there are a few schools under CBSE Board as well.
